FFL Game Rules & Guidelines

Player List a) Each player in the AFL will be designated a position; either Back, Midfielder, Forward or Ruck b) Each AFL Club can only have 6 Midfielders. This is to ensure we have quality depth in the other positions. c) Players will not change positions during a season. d) Players will only be designated 1 position. There are no dual-position player possibilities. e) SSP players and mid-season draft players will be designated a position as soon as possible. They cannot be midfielders as each Club will already have 6.
Draft a) Each FFL team will have to select 41 players in the Draft b) Once a player is selected by a team, no one else can draft this player c) There is no minimum or maximum number of players you can select in any given position d) The Draft will take place in a snake format (eg. Round 1 = 1-10, Round 2 = 10-1 etc.) e) The winner from the previous season will decide how the draft order is established. This must include a level of randomness to how the picks are attributed
Player scoring a) Selected players will score points based on their actual performance. These points are attributed as:
- Kick = 3 points
- Handball = 2 points
- Mark = 3 points
- I50 = 1 point
- R50 = 2 points
- Clearances = 3 points
- Clangers = -2 points
- FF = 1 point
- FA = -1 point
Goal = 8 points b) Each player will have an individual score based on the stats they got in accordance with the points attribution above
Fixture a) A fixture will be released at the beginning of the season by the commissioner. Each team will play each other team twice. This equates to 18 rounds of Home & Away season; presuming a 10 team competition.
Team selection and scoring a) FFL coaches will be required to name their team each week b) Failure to name your team will result in you getting your team from the previous week. If this happens in Round 1, then you will have your team selected in the order you drafted. c) Each week, you will need to name
- 7 Backs
- 6 Midfielders
- 7 Forwards
- 2 Rucks d) You will also select 5 emergencies across any position. If you name more than 1 emergency in a particular position, the order that you name them will be the order that they come in to replace a player from your selected side who doesn’t play e) Of your selected players, the lowest scoring player in each position won’t have their score count to the overall teams score for that week. Eg.
- Your top 6 scoring Backs will count towards your total team score
- Your top 5 scoring Midfielders will count towards your total team score
- Your top 6 scoring Forwards will count towards your total team score
Your top 1 scoring Rucks will count towards your total team score f) Of you and your opponent for that week, the team with the highest total score will be deemed the winner. In the event of a tie, both teams will share the points for that match.
Round lockout a) *All points in this section are based on a round being a normal Fri-Sun round (or referenced as Thurs-Sun where relevant). b) By the time the Friday night game starts, you will not be able to make changes to your team c) When there is a Thursday match, you still name your team in the order you would like it prior to the rest of the team lineups being announced. The players who play on Thursday can not move positions when making adjustments to your team before the Friday lockout. This means that if you have named a Thursday night player as your 1st emergency, and someone in your starting side isn’t selected, they may be moved into the side. BUT if they have a bad game, you are not able to bring someone who was second emergency or not even selected, into your starting side above the player who had already played and was selected as 1st emergency.
Ladder a) Teams will be given 4 Premiership Points for a win and 0 points for a loss b) The Ladder will be sorted by Premiership Points in descending order c) If there is more than one team on the same amount of Premiership Points, then the team with the higher ‘points for’ (ie. Total points scored for the season) will be placed higher on the ladder
If there is still more than one team that is tied, the team that won the last contest between both teams will be placed higher on the ladder d) If a team scores 1800 points or more in a given week, they will be granted 1 Premiership Point (Bonus Point). This is regardless of whether they win or lose. e) At the end of the season, the top 5 teams on the ladder will qualify to play finals (presuming a 10-team competition)
Free Agency a) Players who aren’t currently on an FFL squad are called Free Agents and can be picked up throughout the season. b) When selecting a Free Agent, you must also drop a player from your squad to go back into the pool. That player will become a Free Agent and can be picked up by another FFL Coach immediately after they have been dropped; pending that they are eligible to take a Free Agent at that point in time. c) No Free Agent can be selected until Round 4 has been completed. Upon this completion, our 1st Free Agency Meeting will open.
- During this Free Agency period, only one coach can take a pick at a time.
- The order is based on the current ladder. Bottom of the ladder gets first pick, second bottom gets second pick etc. This time the order is linear, so once everyone has taken a pick, it goes back to the start again and the bottom of the ladder can take their second pick.
- Each coach has 12 hours to take their pick. Once done, they need to notify the group and in particular, the person who is picking after them. If the 12 hours elapses prior to them taking their pick, they will pass that round but be eligible to pick the following round.
- Once a coach chooses to pass a pick, they are then finished with Free Agency until the 1st Free Agency Meeting has completed.
- The 1st Free Agency Meeting must be completed by the time teams are announced for the following round. If not, the meeting will be deemed closed and Free Agency will then re-open for all coaches.
Once every coach has taken their desired picks, the commissioner will announce that the 1st Free Agency meeting has closed, and free-for-all Free Agency will begin immediately. d) Coaches can use a maximum of 21 Free Agent transactions within a season. These include the picks that you take within the 1st Free Agency meeting. e) Once you take a pick, you must wait at least one hour until taking another pick. f) You can only take a maximum of 3 picks within a week. A week begins once the round has been locked out. From that point, you can take a maximum of 3 picks up until the following round begins/locks out. g) When you pick up a Free Agent, you can not delist that player until he has been on your list for 14 days. You are able to trade the player immediately.
Trades a) Trades can be made between two different teams who agree to swap players with each other. b) If both coaches agree to the trade, then it can be processed. There is no veto option for other coaches within the league. c) A trade must involve the same amount of players going from one team to the other. d) When trades are processed they are actioned immediately and the players involved will switch teams. If a trade is processed during a round, after lockout, then they will not be able to be selected in their new teams until the following round. If a trade is processed during a round, but we haven’t yet locked out (ie. After a Thursday night game but before the Friday night game has commenced), the traded players may be placed into the new team for that match (provided they did not play on the Thursday night). e) You are able to trade Free Agent picks if a trade is taking place before the 1st Free Agency meeting but the same amount of players must still be involved (ie. 1st pick + player for a player) f) When making a trade, you are not able to trade a player back to the team you have traded with for 14 days. You are able to trade that player to another team or delist them. g) There is no limit to the amount of trades you can make in a week or for the season. h) There is no trade deadline and trades can continue up until the FFL Grand Final.
Mid-Season Draft a) Once the mid-season draft has been completed and the newly drafted players have been given their FFL position and been integrated into the Free Agency pool, the Mid-Season Draft Free Agency will take place. b) Like the 1st Free Agency meeting, the order of this draft will be in reverse ladder order at the time. c) Each team will have an option to take 1 x pick in the Mid-Season Draft Free Agency and have the ability to select a player that has been taken in the recent Mid-Season Draft. d) Once everyone has had the opportunity to take 1 x pick, the Mid-Season Draft Free Agency will be closed, as announced by the commissioner, and all players who weren’t selected will be able to be selected as a ‘free for all’ Free Agent e) Picks in the Mid-season Draft Free Agency will count towards your total picks that you’re allowed for the week (3) and the season (21).
Finals a) The top 5 teams on the ladder will qualify to play finals (presuming a 10-team competition) b) Week 1: • 1st = week off • Qualifying Final = 2nd v 3rd • Elimination Final = 4th v 5th c) Week 2: • Preliminary Final 1 = 1st v winner of QF • Semi Final = loser of QF v winner of EF d) Week 3: • Preliminary Final 2 = loser of PF1 v winner of SF e) Week 4: • Grand Final = winner of PF1 v winner of PF2 f) The winner of each match will be the team that scores higher than their opponent for that week g) In the event of a tie in Week 1, 2 or 3, the team that finished higher on the ladder will proceed h) In the event of a tie in the Grand Final, the team that qualified for the Grand Final first will be deemed the winner of the match and thus the Premier for that season
Prizing a) Whoever wins the FFL Grand Final will receive $50 from all other players except for the person who lost the Grand Final. b) Of the $400 that they will receive, they must:
- Pay for all the beers for the following years draft (min. 3 slabs)
- Pay Pearcey $50 for his work on the FFL website
- Organise their own engraving on the FFL trophy c) As mentioned in 2.e. The winner will decide how the draft order is established for the following season. This must include a level of randomness to how the picks are attributed.
